Sober Transport: A Service for Recovery Programs

There are various scenarios whereby people in the early days of recovery will require sober transportation services to travel safely and stay committed to leading a life, void of drug-use. While patients should air on the side of caution when traveling or consider travel to treatment, there are scenarios where people who are not fully stable, will require companionship during the entire trip. As a provider of sober transport in VA, Recovery Care Partner is proud to offer sober transportation services for patients who need a mode of transportation, to and from treatment. For today, let’s address the importance of a vehicle of transport to and from recovery programs.

Defining Sober Transport in VA

A driver who offers sober transportation services does more than drive to and from one point to another. Throughout the journey, the driver is supposed to offer safe companionship and accountability. When there are special events going on, the companion will be keeping a watchful eye, since the patient might be exposed to addictive substances. As a trusted companion, your main goal is to ensure the patient’s safety, this is the crux of our sober transport in VA. A companion should carry the medication in case of an emergency. They are also supposed to endure changes in itinerary and lengthy tips, for the patients’ sake. When your loved ones have access to a support person in their recovery, there will be a huge difference, and the recovery process will progress smoothly.

The credentials of a driver with Recovery Care Partner will never come into question. Our team is certified and is more than capable of handling all a patients needs.

Evaluating The Benefits

Someone in need of treatment needs to be closely monitored, more so for those in early recovery. Sober transport services offer a clear break for the person dealing with a substance abuse disorder or mental health issue. That person or group of people are assured safety and a confidante while en route to their recovery destination. The result could lead to a greater willingness toward treatment, and even higher engagement once they have arrived.

Many would assume that getting to treatment is the easy part. However, if the aforementioned points have taught you anything, it’s that fragility and going backwards are never taken off the table, entirely. More importantly, by not having this buffer, the outcomes could be more dire in nature.

How Did Sober Transport Come To Be?

The origins of sober transport programs are hard to pin down, but their popularity had grown after an incident made national headlines in the US.  It started with a person by the name of Carol Anne Gotbaum, who was indigenous to South Africa, before eventually relocating to New York City, years later. In September 2007, she was about to board her flight to Tucson to receive treatment for alcohol abuse. However, the flight was overbooked. After a second flight was denied, later that evening, reports indicated that Gotbaum had a violent episode, and was taken into custody afterwards. After being unsupervised in her cell for about 5-10 minutes, Gotbaum was found dead in her cell. She was reported to have a BAC of .24–3 times the acceptable driving limit of .08. If she had been accompanied by a sober support companion, there is a strong chance that she would be alive today. The use of sober transport in VA and across the country began to grow quickly, after her passing. The story serves as a reminder of why people with substance abuse or co-occurring disorders benefit immensely from therapeutic intervention.
